COOKTOWN HERITAGE TOUR
In 1770 Lieutenant James Cook landed at the mouth of the Endeavour River, the place where Cooktown now stands. It was the first white settlement in Australia. Cooktown is covered in history, with most stone buildings dating back almost a century. It also has an historical museum featuring original artefacts recovered from James Cook's vessel.
This is a great day out with a scenic Reef flight, half day Cooktown tour and a Rainforest scenic flight. Included in the tour price is all hotel transfers, scenic flights, Cooktown half-day tour, entrance fees to museum and interpretive centre. Lunch today is at own expense. Bring along a smile, camera & film, sunscreen, sunglasses and good walking shoes. Baggage is limited to 25 Kg per passenger.
YOUR ITINERARY
0700 Free pickup from your accommodation.
0745 Depart Cairns Airport for a 1¼ hour low-level scenic reef flight to historical Cooktown. On the way we will pass Green Island, Arlington Reef, Upolu Cay, Batt Reef and Cairns Reef, with many opportunities to take photos from our high wing aircraft, fitted with all new windows.
0900 Arrive at Cooktown Airport where we will be met by our local guide for the Cooktown tour. There is no set itinerary or order for this mornings activities, but is structured around what you would like to do and see. Highlights include;
James Cook Museum, where the original anchor and a cannon from Cooks vessel are displayed.
Grassy Hill Lookout & Lighthouse. Cook climbed Grassy Hill on several occasions to find a safe passage out for the Endeavour.
Cooktown Canon.The cannon is still fired on the Queen's Birthday Weekend in June.
Interpretative Center and Art Gallery. Includes the Vera Scarth Johnson (OAM) collection of illustrations.
1300 Lunch is available in a variety of styles and locations. After lunch, explore the town center at your leisure.
1600 We farewell Cooktown and return to Cairns at a moderate altitude, affording panoramic views of this pristine coastline. We will see Black Mountain, Cape Tribulation rainforests, Daintree River, Port Douglas and Cairns northern beaches.
1700 Arrival in Cairns and complimentary return to your accommodation center.
